XTC is the place to be to learn Muay Thai. This martial arts sport is rarely offered at other gyms. Take advantage of learning Muay Thai.
Like most competitive full contact fighting sports, Muay Thai has a heavy focus on body conditioning. Muay Thai is specifically designed to promote a higher level of fitness and toughness required for ring competition.
Muay Thai translates in English literally as Thai Boxing and is known as The Art of the Eight Limbs. This includes the use of fists, elbows, shins and knees. Muay Thai has a long history in Thailand, used in the ancient Thai army, and now prevails as their national sport.
The fists are used in Muay Thai similar to American Boxing. The jab is used to measure distance to see if the cross can land. All power is generated from the hips and driving the foot to the floor.
The elbows can be used in a hooking, uppercut, or overhand motion. The elbow is one of the strongest and sharpest bones in the body and can be used to knock an opponent out or cut them around the eye area. The Roundhouse is the basic Muay Thai kick and uses the shin, not the foot, as the weapon. The low kick aims for the side of the thigh, calf or behind the knee. The mid kick aims for the floating ribs and internal organs, such as the liver and kidneys. The high kick aims for the chin, temple or neck. The knee is used when moving in on opponent aimed at the stomach or in the clinch, aimed at the solar plexus, floating ribs, kidneys, thighs and head. In Muay Thai punches are rarely thrown to the stomach area, as the knee is a much more effective weapon. Good knee technique in the clinch is vital and can make the difference between winning and losing in a close fight. Clinching and throw-downs involve grappling while standing up, trying to knee the sides or stomach and to pull the head down while bringing the knee up. Throw downs must be clean. Trips, sweeps or hip throws are not allowed. The clean throw down is a very high scoring technique.
